We intend to travel to the White Island, a Marine Volcano today, requiring gas masks to prevent death by noxious fumes and hard hats to prevent death by flying volcanic boulders. If the volcano explodes I guess we'll resort to duck and cover! It's dependent only upon the weather (if it's too choppy we won't be able to make land at the island). Requiring: Fully-enclosed shoes to wear on the island (no sandals or jandals allowed), a wet weather jacket, plenty of sunscreen and waterswimming gear.
Today please make your way to the Tongariro National Park (approx. 180kms / 108ms).
Tongariro was New Zealand's first national park. It has a collection of active volcanoes, including Mt Ruapehu which, in winter, is popular for its skiing. There are several walks in the area including the renowned 'Tongariro Crossing'. This one day walk has magnificent views on a clear day and includes many of the most spectacular features of the Tongariro Northern Circuit such as South Crater, Red Crater, the Emerald Lakes and Blue Lake.
